This is a sweet Thanksgiving book, something other than the usual turkey feast tales. It’s partially based on true events (Milly, the author’s note tells us, is an invention). But the spirit of and inspiration for the original Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is here.
Milly is a young immigrant who sees people from around the world looking for a way to celebrate their old traditions while being part of their new country. She makes her way to Mr. Macy himself and asks him to let them sing and stroll the streets as part of their Christmas traditions, and the parade was born. I think this book is charming, and Brett Helquist’s (of Lemony Snicket fame) illustrations are spot on.
**Note: I know this didn’t technically appear on Nov. 24th. It was scheduled to publish then, but for some reason didn’t. Better late than never.
