I did this unit with pre-k for half of February, reading The Snowy Day, Pet Show!, Goggles, and Peter’s Chair. Our copy of A Letter for Amy was missing, or I’d have added that one, too.
After we read Goggles, we made…goggles. I didn’t have enough cardstock, so we used regular paper. Next year, cardstock.
When we read The Snowy Day we also did a prewriting exercise to practice making the lines Peter made in the snow. I used this free worksheet from Teachers Pay Teachers.
When we finished the unit completely, after talking about how Keats makes his illustrations (a combination of paint and collage), we made our own cityscapes using cut paper and crayons (I don’t have any paint). I thought the kids did a great job with this. It was great practice with the scissors, and they really tried to keep their buildings on the bottom half of their papers. I used whatever construction paper I currently have (not much) and some scrapbook paper I’d brought to school.
I hung these up as my March bulletin board.
I bet those foam sheets they have at the craft store would make goggles that would hold up well!
There were a lot of materials I thought of using, but I had zero budget. So, paper it was!
