This was another project from an Asia Citro book. These yarn-wrapped sticks were in her A Little Bit of Dirt: 55+ Science and Art Activities to Reconnect Children with Nature.
We collected the sticks from our nearby woods and playground.
I got them started by hot gluing them to the end of the stick. Then we wrapped. And wrapped. And wrapped.
It takes a while to wrap a bunch of sticks, not gonna lie. She helped with some of it, but I finished up a couple of these myself.
But they’ve become staples in her play boxes downstairs. They’re great as swords, magic wands, and drumsticks. She’s always finding great sticks outside that she wants to hold on to, and now she can.
I think this is a pretty cool idea. I recall loving this sort of thing when I was a kid (although I think my Mom obsessed over the chance that I might poke out my own eyes). But why did you call them “bomb sticks”? My first impression was that they were going to explode in yarn, or perhaps more realistically maybe have yarn tassels like the streamers you used to find on the end of bicycle handles.
Yarn bombing is when you go out into the world and wrap random community things in yarn. Sign posts, trees, birdhouses. It’s also called guerilla knitting (I love crafters). That’s what this reminded me of, I thought of it as yarn bombing our found sticks.
