After 3 planes and something like 17 hours door to door, Adam and I arrived in Kauai last Sunday. We spent a great week there, Kauai is just so chill. Chill enough to drive me to actually describe it as “chill.” I must still have Island Brain.
Anyway, we stayed at the Kauai Beach Resort, which is a “Luxury 3 Star Resort Near the Airport” according to its Google search result. Perfectly nice, nothing groundbreaking, comfortable spa and pool, and it was about $130 a night. So as far as we’re concerned, best resort evah! It took us 2 days to get the internet sorted out, which did nearly give me a nervous breakdown, but it was all good in the end.
Here are some of the basics, I’m still sorting through my fancy camera photos. These are all just point and shoots.
The Kauai Museum is a great stop, with an incredible collection of Hawaiian quilts (all solids, with needle turned applique). Unfortunately, no photos inside.
We drove down to Spouting Horn, Kauai’s answer to Old Faithful, on the south end of the island. But what was more interesting than the blowhole is the view to the right of it:
This sign says it all. There are wild chickens EVERYWHERE on Kauai. Apparently they used to be in chicken farms. Hurricane Iniki in ’92. It picked up the chickens and scattered them all over the island, where they bred with cockfighting chickens to form this crazy feral breed that is just EVERYWHERE (Google it). Harmless, but EVERYWHERE.
The best thing about Poipu, the main resort area on the island, is this cool beach that’s actually 2 beaches joined in the water:
Poipu is where everyone goes, but we just weren’t that into it. The food was diabolical (we had lunch at Brennecke’s, where they gave me GRAY RAW TUNA and Adam a frozen burger), and the whole town felt too resort-y. I much preferred being around Lihue (where the airport is) and Kapaa (very cute little downtown) for half the price, but this beach was pretty darn cool.
