Philip Yates’s A Pirate’s Night Before Christmas is a very cool story about all the pirates on a ship waiting for Sir Peg Leg to bring them treasure on Christmas Day. It follows the pattern of the poem “A Night Before Christmas,” but it adds lots of pirate touches (Sir Peg rides 8 seahorses with names like “Scurvy” and “Salty”). Sebastian Serra’s illustrations are bold and over the top, filling the pages with energy and tons to look at. It’s actually kind of a refreshing spin on the children’s Christmas story, and I think kids will get a kick out of it. Especially if it’s read to them in your best pirate voice.
