The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
This may or may not be how Silverstein originally meant the book, but I think it’s a good example of people taking nature for granted. The Boy needs a little wake up call in self-reliance, and I think this could start a good discussion.
Flush by Carl Hiaasen
Hiaasen’s stories of business vs. nature can be a little heavy-handed at times, but this is a good book to get teens talking about the environment.
The Pelican Brief by John Grisham
This book is absolutely cheesy mass market fluff, but I read a lot of children and teen books and wanted to put in something for the adults. This was all my brain could dig up that I’d actually read all the way through. I read it in high school, I remember pelicans…pollution…intrigue. Take it to the beach.
