I recently got on a small Cormac McCarthy kick and listened to the unabridged audio books of No Country for Old Men and The Road back to back. Both books are read by Tom Stechschulte, whose voice I now associate with McCarthy. I thought his voice was perfect for No Country for Old Men, but it didn’t quite work for me with The Road. It was right for a modern western, but the post-apocalyptic father and son story didn’t really match.
I still think both novels are impressive. I love westerns, so I have to say I preferred No Country for Old Men. I enjoyed the themes, the sheriff, the villain, the hero and his inevitable fate. But The Road flat out terrified me. I thought about it for days after, so it had more of an impact on me. Both are worth reading/hearing.
