Happy Easter!
We’ve been seriously thinking about getting a pet rabbit here at the Reeve house since I’m allergic to dogs and cats. But apparently, my allergist thinks I could handle a bunny. We’re waiting until after spring break (which started on Thursday!!) to seriously look into getting one. But since it’s Easter and I’ve got bunny fever, I thought some of my favorite rabbit books were in order.
The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams (first published 1922). One of my favorite children’s books about a stuffed rabbit who transforms from unloved toy to beloved treasure back to unwanted toy.
My Friend Rabbit by Eric Rohmann (2002). A wonderful Caldecott Medal winner about a mischievous rabbit who means well but always manages to get his friends into trouble.
The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter (first published 1901). The famous story of a young rabbit who decides not to listen to his mother and gets in over his head. Potter’s story still stands up to the test of time, it’s a great cautionary tale.
The Rabbits by John Marsden and Shaun Tan (2003). A gorgeous and haunting story about a civilization of rabbits who invade a foreign land and gradually take it over. An allegory of colonization for older children.
Duck! Rabbit! by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Tom Lichtenheld (2009). A very charming book using the famous optical illusion as the backdrop for a debate between 2 unseen narrators. What do they see, a duck or a rabbit?
Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems (2004). Another cautionary tale, this fabulous Caldecott Honor book shows what happens when a toddler loses her favorite toy at the laundromat. Her dad finds himself in for a rough afternoon.
