I can’t believe it’s come to an end. The Last Olympian marks the final book in the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series by Rick Riordan. And I’ve finally finished reading it.
I love these books. Young Percy Jackson discovers his father his Poseidon, which makes him a demigod. Through all 5 books he lives with this knowledge and everything it involves: not seeing much of his dad, learning to fight, knowing Big Heavy Things that regular humans don’t. And this book is the culmination of all that, an epic battle between the good and evil forces built up through the whole series. And while it was sometimes very slow moving, I was satisfied when it ended. And when it hinted at things I won’t reveal here.
The time has come for Percy to face the prophecy predicted for his 16th birthday. His actions will be the difference between the salvation and the fall of Olympus, perched above the Empire State Building. Kronos, father of the Olympians, is back for revenge, and he’s got friends. Titans, minor gods, disgruntled demigods. And they’re heading for New York. The book is one giant battle through the streets of New York, and when it’s good it’s really good. I can’t say this is my favorite of the series (The Lightning Thief will always have that spot), but it pulls the series together and satisfies everything I want in a conclusion. It’s solid stuff.
