I am whatever the opposite of a green thumb is. Red pinky maybe? When it comes to gardening, I have no idea what I’m doing. This is the first time I have ever lived in a house after a lifetime of apartment dwelling. My mother gardens, and she’s carved out beds all around the ground floor apartment where I grew up. And all my grandparents were farmers; my whole family could just look at soil and tomatoes would start growing. I grew up around agricultural people, but I am clearly missing that gene. I killed a cactus once, the only thing I ever really tried to grow. Do you know how hard it is to kill a cactus?! Not that hard for me, apparently.
Adam has gotten very into lawn care lately, I think mainly because of all the cool lawn gear. It’s a brand new house with a brand new lawn, no trees, no flowers, just grass. So now that our grass is starting to look like a real lawn, the pressure is on to have flowers and herbs and vegetables. Maybe I’m not ready for vegetables, as we have some very cute resident bunnies who already hang out in our yard.
About a month ago, I won a basket of gardening supplies at the annual Nutley Rotary Beefsteak Dinner. This is a phenomenon I’ll have to explain someday in another lengthy post, but my winnings have been sitting in the garage waiting to be used. Today, I used them. I turned over the soil in the front flower bed, I pulled up all the grass at its root, and I sprinkled a bucket of all purpose flower seeds everywhere. I used a hose and everything. Now I just have to wait and see if my half hour of hard work pays off.
This was the flower bed before my dazzling display of gardening skills:
That grass was TALL. Here’s the flower bed now:
We’ll have to wait and see.
